It wasn’t long before it was noticed on the roads and beyond- and Transport Monthly magazine got in touch looking to feature the fleet in their monthly magazine. Over 18 months ago Platts Animal Bedding had a vehicle wrapped for the first time. Impressed by the result and the striking imagery Platts are gradually rolling out this new livery across their entire fleet. They have now wrapped five of their trucks, a landrover and an exhibition trailer. These distinctive vehicles can now be seen delivering product up and down the country from the Orkney Isles to Cornwall and everywhere in between.
First established by husband and wife partnership, Christine and Robert Platt, in 1972, Platts Animal Bedding operates as a specialist in manufacturing and delivering animal bedding. Since its inception 44 years ago, the Wrexham-based business has transitioned from a small family-run company with a single 32.5-tonne truck, into one of the UK’s leading suppliers of animal bedding, which is demonstrated by its impressive portfolio of over 5,000 satisfied clients.
All of Platts Animal Bedding’s products are now developed in-house at its state-of-the-art processing, baling and packaging facilities. The modern facilities utilise automated technology to ensure a rapid and highly efficient turnaround processing raw material into one of ten unique animal bedding products from completely dust-extracted shavings for the equine industry, to pure softwood sawdust for dairy cattle.
Currently, Platts Animal Bedding commands a dedicated fleet of 17 vehicles and almost 100 trailers that are installed throughout the UK. The fleet consists of 11 MAN Tractor Units, three Volvo rigids, one Mercedes Rigid with the Moffatt Unloader, one MAN Rigid with Moffatt unloader and a DAF Hookloader. Platts have also recently invested in the purchase of three new moving floor trailers in the traditional Platts colours adorned with the distinctive Platts logo.
The company’s fleet is equipped with tracking systems, forward facing cameras and weighbridge software. The drivers at Platts take pride in maintaining their vehicles, ensuring that they are fully operational and clean. Ashley Wood, Transport Manager, stated that the trucks are always getting noticed on the roads for their impressive livery.
MAN has become the company’s preferred brand because of the high-quality service that they provide. The family-run business praises local MAN dealer AN Richards, who they have a longstanding relationship with, for providing a reliable service.
Platts Animal Bedding are committed to providing an ongoing and pro-active driver training and monitoring program including a new video coaching tool provided by Roadsense Technology. This tool allows drivers to review videos of their own driving to see how they can improve safety and efficiency.
Platts Animal Bedding purchased a site located close to its current Head Quarters, which opened last November as Platts Commercial Services . This means Platts now has now an immediate on-site facility available to carry out inspections, servicing and rectification of any defects. The investment into the HGV garage has included state of the brake testers, headlamp aligners, emissions tester and modern equipment. Furthermore, the business is now open for third party work offering MOT preparations, servicing and repairs for HGVs and PSVs.
The next year will see Platts Animal Bedding develop further by the addition of a new bulk loading system, which is stated to be running in summer this year. The company has made a substantial £250,000 investment in new bulk loading technology which will generate more jobs within its transport division.
